Trump Expands H-2A Visas and Reduces Farm Raids

The Trump administration modified the federal H-2A visa program to expedite the approval of temporary foreign agricultural workers, expecting to issue an additional 119,000 visas to mitigate labor shortages. These changes include the implementation of lower state-specific hourly wage guidelines and allowing employers to charge workers for housing that was previously free.

To further stabilize the food supply and reduce consumer costs, the administration lifted tariffs on imported beef, coffee, bananas, and tomatoes. Simultaneously, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has reduced the frequency of workplace raids on farms and ranches since June, though enforcement continues in Democratic-led cities.

Agricultural trade groups and the U.S. Department of Agriculture defend the measures as essential for farmers and ranchers. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins stated that while the administration is pursuing strategic deportations to avoid compromising food production, the long-term goal remains a 100% American workforce achieved through automation.

The United Farm Workers union opposes the new rules, criticizing the wage cuts and housing charges as concessions to business interests. The union described the combination of previous raids and current wage reductions as a "one-two punch" against laborers.
