Nvidia Denies Developing China-Specific AI Language Processing Unit
Nvidia dismissed reports that it is developing a China-specific language processing unit to bypass U.S. export controls on AI hardware.
Nvidia denied reports that it plans to ship a China-specific language processing unit (LPU) by the end of the year. The company issued the denial after a report from The Information claimed employees intended to begin small-batch shipments of an LPU using technology licensed from Groq to accelerate AI chatbot responses while adhering to U.S. export controls.
A company spokesperson stated the reporting was incorrect and that no China-specific LPU product exists on the company's roadmap. This dispute follows recent efforts by the company to manage U.S. restrictions on its next-generation Vera Rubin AI system and the limited delivery of H200 AI chips to Chinese firms such as Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance.
Chief Executive Jensen Huang previously stated in May that the company had largely conceded the Chinese AI chip market to its primary domestic competitor, Huawei Technologies.
