Mota-Engil to Manage Congo Railway for Mineral Exports

Mota-Engil SGPS SA is expected to sign a 30-year concession agreement with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to rehabilitate and manage a 1,000-kilometer railway. The project focuses on transporting copper and cobalt from mining hubs in Kolwezi, Tenke, and Lubumbashi to Western markets.

This initiative is part of the Lobito Corridor and may receive up to $1 billion in financing from the U.S. International Development Finance Corp. The project aligns with the goals of the Donald Trump administration to reduce reliance on China, as Chinese firms currently dominate the output of critical minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mota-Engil already manages a connecting rail line in Angola through a joint venture with Trafigura Group, extending the company's operational footprint across the corridor.
