Trump and Rodriguez Discuss Venezuelan Elections and Debt

President Donald Trump met with Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodriguez on Tuesday during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The leaders held brief discussions focused on the upcoming elections in Venezuela and the restructuring of the country's billions of dollars in sovereign debt.

Rodriguez, who took power following a January raid by U.S. forces that captured former President Nicolas Maduro, confirmed in her address to the General Assembly that elections will be held. She praised the restart of diplomatic dialogue between the two nations.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington continues to press for political change in Venezuela. Trump later confirmed the conversations to reporters in Washington.
