Nigeria Launches N50,000 Monthly Relief for Vulnerable Households

The Nigerian government launched the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention to provide N50,000 monthly stipends to vulnerable households facing high food inflation.

The Government of Nigeria launched the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) on October 30, 2026, to provide a monthly stipend of N50,000 to the country's most vulnerable households. Announced by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, the presidential initiative aims to cushion the impact of global food inflation and the rising cost of essential goods.

Aligned with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, the program complements existing social protection and economic support systems. Funds are disbursed through licensed digital financial service providers directly into bank accounts or mobile wallets. Beneficiaries must provide consent via SMS to receive the payments.

Minister Doro emphasized that the program requires no application fees, registration through agents, or formal applications. He warned citizens against fraudsters and advised beneficiaries to keep their personal identification numbers (PINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) confidential. The government intends to review the stipend amount periodically based on changes in the cost of living.
