Lawmakers Demand Probe Into USS Abraham Lincoln Deployment Conditions

U.S. lawmakers are seeking an independent investigation into reports of malnutrition and mental health crises aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln following a record-breaking deployment.

U.S. lawmakers and state officials are demanding an independent investigation into the conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln after the aircraft carrier spent over 240 days at sea without a port call. The vessel, which diverted from the Indo-Pacific to the Middle East to blockade Iranian ports, reportedly faced horrific conditions including food and supply shortages, broken plumbing, and unsanitary environments. Senator Mark Kelly and other legislators cited reports of sailor malnutrition and a mental health crisis, including multiple incidents where crew members attempted to jump overboard.

Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have dismissed these reports as fake news or completely misrepresented. During an Oval Office briefing, Trump claimed a retired admiral assured him the ship was beautifully maintained and asserted that the deployment length was not nearly long enough. Admiral Brad Cooper of U.S. Central Command visited the ship in the Arabian Sea, praising the crew's resilience while acknowledging that long-term sea service is uniquely challenging.

In response to the crisis, a delegation of San Diego congressmembers and California senators requested that the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General conduct a formal review. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also demanded a transparent accounting of the mission, calling the administration's lack of information a severe breach of responsibility. The U.S. Navy is now moving to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln with the USS George Washington as the carrier returns to San Diego.
