Donald Trump Abandons Plan to Rename Atlantic Ocean
President Donald Trump announced he has dropped a proposal to rename the Atlantic Ocean after Google CEO Sundar Pichai rejected the request.
President Donald Trump announced at a rally in South Carolina that he has abandoned a proposal to rename the Atlantic Ocean the Trump Ocean. The decision follows a rejection from Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who reportedly argued that oceans span multiple countries and cannot be renamed like domestic features.
While dropping the Atlantic proposal, Trump suggested renaming the Pacific Ocean the American Ocean and questioned how European leaders would respond to such a change. He described Pichai and Google co-founder Sergey Brin as brilliant guys, though Google has not independently confirmed the discussions regarding the Atlantic Ocean.
These proposals are part of a wider administration effort to rename geographic landmarks. Google Maps has already updated labels for users in the United States to display the Gulf of America and Lake America, following executive orders and updates to the US Geographic Names Information System.
