DHS Issues $9.6 Billion in Fines to Prompt Self-Deportation

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued more than 31,600 fine notices totaling over $9.6 billion to pressure illegal aliens to leave the United States voluntarily. Under the administration of Donald Trump, the agency is implementing a strategy that imposes daily fines of $1,000 on those who remain in the country illegally.

To incentivize voluntary departure, the DHS is offering a $1,000 stipend and free flights home facilitated through the CBP Home mobile application. According to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, this approach allows individuals to depart while preserving the possibility of returning to the country legally in the future.

The agency reports that approximately two million illegal aliens have left the U.S., consisting of 1.6 million self-deportations and over 400,000 individuals removed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). To support these enforcement efforts, ICE has expanded its workforce by hiring roughly 5,000 new agents.
