Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Defends Tinubu Economic Reforms

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu defended President Bola Tinubu's macroeconomic policies while attributing current citizen hardship to security failures and global economic pressures.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu defended the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu during an interview with Channels Television, stating that the administration has successfully stabilized the macroeconomic indicators of Nigeria. Kalu highlighted the stabilization of fuel prices and exchange rates, as well as an increase in foreign direct investments, as evidence of progress. He contrasted the current administration's approach with that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, claiming the government is avoiding the practice of printing money through Central Bank financing.

While acknowledging that millions of Nigerians face severe cost-of-living struggles, Kalu attributed this microeconomic pain to factors outside the government's immediate control. He cited insecurity from the Sahel region, including insurgency and banditry, which prevents citizens from farming. He also pointed to global economic pressures stemming from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Kalu argued that economic reform requires short-term hardship to achieve long-term stability, noting that reform is not a party.

Additionally, Kalu addressed tensions between the state and the Catholic Church. He asserted that President Tinubu has not insulted the Catholic Bishops and therefore has no need to apologize for his actions.
