Maine Candidates Campaign on Cost of Living Before Election Day

Republican and Democratic candidates in Maine's Senate and Congressional races are focusing on affordability and federal funding as voters head to the polls.

Candidates in two high-stakes elections in Maine are conducting final campaign tours ahead of Tuesday's Election Day, with both races centering on the rising cost of living. In the race for the U.S. Senate, Susan Collins is highlighting her seniority and her position as chair of the Appropriations Committee. She cited her success in securing $1.5 billion in federal funding for state projects, including medical research and $1.1 million for the Winthrop Police Department.

Her opponent, former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, has focused his closing arguments on heating oil prices and the stability of the healthcare industry, warning that budget gaps could leave hospitals overrun. National polls currently characterize the Senate race as a toss-up with implications for party control of the chamber.

Simultaneously, former Republican Governor Paul LePage and Democratic State Auditor Matt Dunlap are competing for Maine's 2nd Congressional District seat. LePage is campaigning on a platform of securing the border and lowering taxes to combat the high cost of groceries and property taxes. Dunlap is prioritizing the expansion of affordable healthcare and the reduction of living costs. He has also advocated for a war powers resolution to ensure Congress maintains its constitutional authority to declare war and end conflicts in the Middle East.
