Andy Burnham Schedules November EU Summit to Renegotiate Ties
Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a November 20 summit in Brussels to negotiate a closer post-Brexit relationship with the European Union to boost economic growth.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced on Monday that a UK-EU summit will take place in Brussels on November 20 to negotiate a closer post-Brexit relationship. Burnham is seeking agreements on food and drink standards, a youth mobility scheme, and emissions trading, estimating these deals could add over £10 billion per year to the UK economy by 2040. He characterized the current status quo as insufficient, arguing that failing to seek closer links would be a "dereliction of duty."
While advocating for a pragmatic approach to boost growth and control illegal immigration, Burnham told MPs he will maintain red lines against rejoining the single market, customs union, or freedom of movement. He pledged that the British public would remain the "boss" in these negotiations.
Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch criticized the strategy, claiming Burnham has already revealed his negotiating hand to tough EU officials. Separately, Burnham asserted that Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum, though Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty later clarified that such attempts were unsuccessful. The Russian government has denied these allegations.
