First Canadian CF-35A Fighter Jet Completes Maiden Flight

The first F-35A Lightning II destined for Canada, designated as the CF-35A, completed a 90-minute maiden test flight on September 23, 2026, at the Lockheed Martin final assembly plant in Fort Worth, Texas. Featuring full Canadian markings and insignia, the aircraft represents the first new fighter model introduced by Canada in 44 years as part of the Future Fighter Capability Project to replace the aging CF-188 Hornet fleet.

While the Treasury Board of Canada finalized an agreement in 2023 to acquire 88 jets for approximately $19 billion, the program has faced recent instability. Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, ordered a review of the procurement in March 2025 following tensions with the United States. The government is currently weighing whether to proceed with the remaining 72 aircraft or explore alternatives, such as the Swedish Saab Gripen, though it remains contractually obligated to the first 16 jets currently in production.

The first aircraft is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026 to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona for pilot training. The Royal Canadian Air Force anticipates the first delivery on Canadian soil in 2028, with initial operational capability projected for 2029.
