Trump Defends Extended USS Abraham Lincoln Deployment Amid Crisis Reports

The United States Navy is deploying the USS George Washington to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed for 266 days to support operations against Iran. The Lincoln spent approximately 200 of those days without a port call, following a similar record-breaking 326-day deployment by the USS Gerald R. Ford. Analysts warn that these extended missions stretch the Navy's limited fleet of 11 nuclear carriers and may leave the Indo-Pacific vulnerable to Chinese incursions.

Donald Trump dismissed reports of a mental health crisis and poor living conditions aboard the Lincoln, stating the deployment had gone on "not nearly long enough" to pressure Iran's nuclear program. Democratic lawmakers and crew families reported severe issues, including plumbing failures, food shortages, water contamination, and at least one instance of a sailor jumping overboard in August. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected these claims as "completely misrepresented."

While the U.S. government is shifting toward increased economic sanctions and reduced military activity due to depleted precision munitions, the Navy continues to manage the rotation of its supercarriers. The USS Abraham Lincoln is scheduled to return to its home port in San Diego once the handover to the USS George Washington is complete.
