Donald Trump Issues Executive Orders Restricting Transgender Rights
President Donald Trump issued executive orders redefining sex by genetic makeup and banning federal funding for gender-affirming care for minors.
President Donald Trump launched a federal campaign to restrict the rights of transgender Americans on his first day in office. He issued an executive order redefining sex as a person's genetic makeup at conception, a move that removes federal recognition of transgender, non-binary, and intersex individuals. This redefinition has halted federal data collection on these populations and eliminated federal grants for projects that acknowledge transgender existence.
The administration has further restricted access to services by banning passports that do not match the sex assigned at birth. Trump directed the United States Department of Health and Human Services to terminate federal funding and insurance coverage for gender-affirming care for minors. Additionally, he issued an order restricting transgender athletes from women's sports.
These federal actions follow a decade of state-level restrictions and shifting public opinion. Recent ballot initiatives in Washington, Colorado, and Arizona have banned transgender girls from school sports, with Arizona extending the ban to private clubs. The policy shift has already resulted in the closure of more than 40 gender clinics across the country.
