Ukraine Drone Industry Faces Strategic Risk From Chinese Components

Ukraine remains heavily dependent on Chinese electronics for military drones despite efforts to diversify supply chains and increase domestic manufacturing.

The Ukrainian military drone industry faces a strategic vulnerability due to its continued reliance on Chinese electronics. While Ukraine has expanded domestic production and increased imports from Taiwan, Europe, and the United States, it cannot fully replace the low costs and massive production capacity of China for critical components such as battery cells, magnets, and thermal sensors. Transitioning entirely to Western alternatives could increase production costs by 60% and reduce overall output by a similar margin.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that China is "slightly on Russia's side," explaining that this manifests as a greater willingness to assist Moscow rather than providing direct weapons supplies. To circumvent tightening Chinese export controls, Ukrainian firms have increasingly utilized intermediaries in third countries and altered paperwork. Direct imports from China dropped from nearly 90% in early 2024 to 28% during the first eight months of 2026, though many components are still Chinese-made and routed through the Czech Republic and Poland.

Industry leaders warn of the risks associated with this dependency. Andrii Taganskyi of Odd Systems noted that if China stops production for Ukraine, the military would be "blinded," specifically citing the necessity of Chinese parts for camera functionality. Similarly, Oleksii Babenko of Vyriy cautioned that Ukraine must prepare for a scenario where China fully aligns with the Russian position.
