Israeli Military Strikes Gaza and Detains 30 in West Bank
The Israeli military killed at least nine people in a Gaza airstrike and detained 30 Palestinians during raids across the occupied West Bank.
The Israeli military conducted an airstrike on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, targeting a Hamas-run municipal police headquarters in the Tuffah area of Gaza City. Palestinian sources report at least nine people, including a woman, were killed and 15 others injured. The strike occurred near tents for displaced people; the military stated the operation, along with another in Nuseirat, targeted two Hamas commanders. Hamas-run interior authorities described the event as a "brutal massacre" against civilian police officers.
Simultaneously, Israeli forces detained at least 30 Palestinians during raids across the occupied West Bank, specifically in Hebron, Nablus, Qalqilia, Tulkarem, and Bethlehem. These operations involved home searches, property destruction, and field interrogations. Among those arrested in Bethlehem was journalist Abdulrahman Abdul Karim Mohammed Hassan.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society characterized the West Bank raids as collective punishment and an escalation in abduction operations. The organization specifically described the arrest of journalists as an attempt to "erase the truth and target the Palestinian narrative."
These military actions coincide with ongoing diplomatic efforts. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jared Kushner recently agreed to form working groups on Gaza's demilitarization and infrastructure, though Netanyahu continues to reject a U.S.-backed roadmap requiring Israeli withdrawal before Hamas is fully disarmed.
