Trump Administration Revives Immigration Probe Into Ilhan Omar

The Trump administration is investigating Representative Ilhan Omar for alleged marriage and immigration fraud, with officials suggesting the probe could lead to her deportation.

The Trump administration has revived a federal investigation into Ilhan Omar, focusing on whether the U.S. Representative entered into a sham marriage in 2009 with Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Investigators are examining if the marriage, involving a British citizen suspected of being her brother, was designed to facilitate Elmi's acquisition of a green card.

This current inquiry expands upon an Obama-era probe by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security that found evidence of fraud but stalled due to the five-year statute of limitations. The broader investigation now includes the Omar family's status as refugees from Somalia, specifically whether her late father provided false information on immigration forms. The probe became public after federal agents searched Omar's Washington home on October 12.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that proving the lawmaker should not have been admitted to the U.S. could lead to her deportation. Representative Omar has denied the allegations, characterizing them as a "baseless, disgusting conspiracy theory" and a political smear.
