Putin and Prabowo Strengthen Ties at Eastern Economic Forum

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met in Vladivostok on September 3, 2026, during the 11th Eastern Economic Forum. Attending as the guest of honor, President Prabowo discussed strengthening bilateral ties during a luncheon, noting that trade between the two nations grew by 12% in 2025.

The leaders focused on expanding cooperation in energy, specifically nuclear energy, as well as agriculture, shipbuilding, and digital technology. President Prabowo emphasized the strategic importance of maritime connectivity, citing their shared status as Pacific nations. The meeting coincided with the signing of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union.

During a speech at Far Eastern Federal University, President Prabowo invited President Putin and a Russian delegation to visit Indonesia. Prabowo noted he has visited Russia four times since taking office on October 20, 2024, including trips to Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and stated the invitation was intended to repay the hospitality he received during those visits.
