Pentagon Severs All Academic Ties With Harvard University

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth terminated all military training and fellowships at Harvard University, citing the institution's promotion of woke and radical ideologies.

The United States Department of War announced it will sever all academic ties with Harvard University beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated the move ends all graduate-level professional military education, fellowships, and certificate programs for active duty service members. While currently enrolled personnel may finish their courses, Hegseth asserted that the university no longer meets the needs of the military, alleging that officers return from the institution with globalist and radical ideologies that undermine fighting ranks.

Hegseth further cited Harvard's research partnerships with the Chinese Communist Party, an environment that allegedly celebrates Hamas and tolerates anti-Jewish bias, and the use of race-based discrimination. He characterized the university as woke and a center for hate-America activism. The Pentagon also announced it will evaluate similar programs at other Ivy League and civilian universities to determine if they are cost-effective compared to public and military institutions.

This decision is part of a broader confrontation between the Trump administration and the university. President Donald Trump has frozen $2.7 billion in federal research funding and demanded $1 billion in damages from Harvard, accusing the institution of being strongly antisemitic. Harvard President Alan Garber has rejected these claims, characterizing the administration's actions as illegal retaliation against academic freedom, and has filed lawsuits to restore the withheld government grants and contracts.
