Royal Navy Tracks Russian Warships Escorting Sanctioned Cargo

The Royal Navy executed an intense 72-hour operation last week to track Russian vessels moving from the North Sea toward the English Channel. HMS Duncan, HMS St Albans, and HMS Severn, supported by a Merlin helicopter, monitored the Russian destroyer Admiral Levchenko as it escorted the sanctioned cargo ships General Skobelev and Sparta toward Dover. In response, Russia deployed the Neustrashimy frigate to protect the shipment.

The operation concluded near Ushant, France, where UK forces handed over monitoring duties to a NATO ally. First Sea Lord General Sir Gwyn Jenkins stated that shadow fleet vessels pose an unacceptable risk to security and the environment, noting that the interception of the Smyrtos in June demonstrated the UK's commitment to acting against those evading sanctions to fund Russia's war on Ukraine.

This naval activity follows a 25% increase in Russian vessel presence in UK waters. Tensions have escalated following Prime Minister Andy Burnham's visit to Kyiv, where he pledged military support and missile blueprints for Ukraine. In response, the Kremlin issued threats, and former Russian foreign minister Andrei Fedorov suggested potential retaliatory semi-military actions against British drone factories.
