US Orders Defense Contractors to Accelerate Weapons Production

Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg ordered major defense contractors, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and RTX Corp, to dramatically accelerate the production and delivery of critical weapons systems. In an August 5 memo, Feinberg demanded aggressive delivery schedules by late August, stating that "years-long development cycles are not acceptable."

The directive follows the depletion of U.S. stockpiles during the war with Iran. Military reports indicate that long-range precision missiles are nearly exhausted, and inventories of Patriot and THAAD interceptors have dropped significantly while countering low-cost Iranian drones.

President Donald Trump has publicly denied any munitions shortage, claiming the U.S. possesses "massive amounts." However, reports indicate he privately confronted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at Camp David regarding the issue.

To address the shortfall, the Pentagon signed framework agreements with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to increase production. Lockheed Martin received a contract worth up to $58.6 billion to triple PAC-3 production by 2030. Full implementation of these measures remains dependent on Congress passing a deadlocked $1.15 trillion defense spending bill.
