Atiku Abubakar Demands Tinubu Sign Police Exit Bill
Atiku Abubakar challenged President Bola Tinubu to explain delays in signing the Police Exit Bill as retired officers face extreme financial hardship.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar challenged President Bola Tinubu to explain why the Police Exit Bill, reportedly submitted in March, remains unsigned. Atiku alleged that the delay has left retired police officers in extreme poverty, citing reports of retirees begging at the Central Mosque in Abuja and others gathering firewood for sale in Bauchi to survive.
Atiku claimed that the financial crisis extends to active duty, stating some serving officers are withdrawing 25 percent of their pension savings to feed their families. He demanded an urgent salary review for the police force, noting that members of the Armed Forces have already received pay increases.
Calling on the National Assembly to publish the formal status of the bill, Atiku pledged that if elected president in 2027, he would implement a Police Dignity Guarantee Plan. This proposed plan would focus on settling pension arrears and providing comprehensive healthcare coverage for officers.
