EU Announces 710 Million Euro Global Aid Package

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a 710 million euro humanitarian aid package during the 81st United Nations General Assembly to support communities hit by conflict, extreme weather, and rising living costs. The funding is designed to address global instability and forced displacement.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the primary target of the package, receiving 380 million euros to strengthen migration governance and protect vulnerable migrants, alongside 97 million euros to combat food insecurity, malnutrition, and climate shocks. Additional emergency funds are allocated to the Democratic Republic of Congo for Ebola response and the Great Lakes region for stability. Other designated recipients include Lebanon and the Palestinian territories, which will receive 103 million euros, and Ukraine, which is allocated 52 million euros for winter preparations.

Beyond the humanitarian package, the European Commission introduced three Global Gateway investments. These include 60 million euros for primary healthcare in Ethiopia and a loan provided by the European Investment Bank to expand the production of vaccines and biological medicines in Colombia.
