Donald Trump Endorses Michele Tafoya for Minnesota Senate Seat

President Donald Trump endorsed Republican Senate candidate Michele Tafoya during an Ohio rally, prompting Tafoya to distance herself from his rhetoric while facing attacks from Peggy Flanagan.

President Donald Trump endorsed Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michele Tafoya during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday. Trump described Tafoya as a "very respected person" and claimed that elections in Minnesota are cheated. The endorsement comes as Tafoya runs to succeed Senator Tina Smith in a close race against Democratic Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan.

Tafoya has responded tepidly to the endorsement, stating her campaign focuses on bringing all Minnesotans together. She explicitly condemned Trump's recent rhetoric regarding Somali Minnesotans as "not appropriate" and has run advertisements claiming she will stand up for the state when the president is wrong.

Democratic opponent Peggy Flanagan has used the endorsement to tie Tafoya to Trump's policies on immigration, abortion rights, and his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. The Flanagan campaign claims Tafoya is "in lockstep" with the president.

Amidst the political friction, Tafoya unveiled a five-point public safety plan at the Minnesota State Capitol, addressing recent shootings by young Somali Americans and a foiled terrorist plot at the Mall of America. While distancing herself from Trump's language, Tafoya received the endorsement of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, which cited her commitment to public safety over that of Flanagan.
