Trump Terminates Somali TPS Amid Massive Minnesota Fraud Probe

President Donald Trump terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalis in Minnesota after federal agencies uncovered industrial-scale fraud across state social services. The crackdown follows investigations into the Feeding Our Future nonprofit, which siphoned approximately $250 million from COVID-19 child-feeding programs, and broader allegations that up to $9 billion in federal funds may have been stolen since 2018. The fraud allegedly involved sham daycare centers and shell companies, with some funds reportedly smuggled to the al-Qaeda-linked group al-Shabaab in Somalia.

FBI Director Kash Patel and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem surged personnel to Minneapolis, conducting door-to-door raids at over 30 suspected fraud sites. These actions were partly prompted by a viral video from influencer Nick Shirley alleging $100 million in misappropriated childcare funds. In response to the systemic failures, the Department of Health and Human Services froze $185 million in childcare payments, and the Small Business Administration suspended $5.5 million in funding to probe $430 million in suspected PPP fraud.

Governor Tim Walz defended his administration's oversight and condemned the federal response as a PR stunt targeting immigrants. Conversely, Republican leaders including Tom Emmer and Marsha Blackburn called for Walz's resignation and the deportation of involved individuals. While federal prosecutors note that the vast majority of the 92 charged individuals are Somali Americans, critics and Democratic officials describe the crackdown as the weaponization of federal agencies to scapegoat the Somali community.
