Coalition Declares June 12 Nigeria Democracy Day a Protest Day
A coalition of civil society groups and activists called for nationwide protests on June 12 to oppose President Bola Tinubu's economic policies and security failures.
A coalition of civil society organizations, trade unions, and youth groups has declared June 12, Nigeria's Democracy Day, as a day of nationwide protest and mass action. Led by human rights lawyer Femi Falana and musician Falz, the movement aims to compel the federal government to reverse anti-poor policies and combat escalating insecurity.
The coalition specifically targets the administration of President Bola Tinubu, citing the removal of fuel subsidies, currency devaluation, and rising electricity tariffs as primary drivers of poverty and skyrocketing food prices. The groups argue that these economic measures have severely declined living standards despite increased government statutory allocations.
Beyond economic relief, the protesters demand the immediate release of Nigerians held captive in several states, including Borno, Katsina, Kaduna, Oyo, Ekiti, Kwara, Zamfara, and Niger. The organizers are calling on students, professionals, and workers to mobilize within their communities and workplaces. This demonstration is intended to be the first in a series of actions designed to force the government to address terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
