Tech Sell-off Erases Billions as AI Spending Concerns Grow

Palantir and other major software and semiconductor stocks plummeted Friday amid investor anxiety over AI spending sustainability and potential Federal Reserve interest-rate hikes.

A broad-based sell-off hit the technology sector on Friday, October 16, 2026, causing simultaneous declines in software, semiconductor, and cybersecurity stocks. Palantir shares fell approximately 7%, erasing $34 billion in market value and reversing a record-breaking run that peaked at nearly $213 on Monday. The decline is part of a wider software sector crash where 45 stocks lost over $260 billion in combined value, including an $83 billion loss for Microsoft.

Investor anxiety centered on the sustainability of artificial intelligence spending and the potential for interest-rate hikes, which increase funding costs for AI infrastructure. During the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group's annual meeting in Bangkok, Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh declined to provide expectations for the central bank's next rate-setting meeting, adding to the market uncertainty.

Cybersecurity firms faced additional pressure. Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike each dropped roughly 18% over the week. The decline followed a security vulnerability advisory issued by Palo Alto Networks, which was subsequently listed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Other notable losses included Twilio, which fell 10.6%, and Oracle, which closed 5% lower. Meanwhile, reports that OpenAI is in talks to acquire security firm Trail of Bits have revived industry competition concerns.
