Financial Markets Prioritize AI and Iran Conflict Over Midterms

Investors are ignoring upcoming U.S. midterm elections to focus on AI corporate earnings, Federal Reserve interest rate policies, and geopolitical tensions with Iran.

Financial markets are largely disregarding the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, with investors prioritizing inflation, interest rates, and artificial intelligence over political outcomes. While historical trends suggest the party in the White House typically loses ground during midterms, data from Ned Davis Research, Inc. indicates that broad market returns generally do not depend on political alignment.

Donald Trump has demanded lower interest rates for months, but the Federal Reserve System has maintained its policy rate at 3.75 to 4 percent. Markets anticipate further rate increases through June to combat inflation. Simultaneously, corporate earnings from AI chipmakers and volatility in AI infrastructure spending are driving market movement. This includes AI start-up Anthropic, which reported $16.3 billion in sales for the first half of the year in documents filed to go public.

Geopolitical instability is also impacting the economy. The ongoing war with Iran, following U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28, has caused a spike in energy stocks and rising oil prices. Outside the United States, national demonstrations over education and living costs in France have led to a weakening of that country's sovereign bonds.
