U.S. Retailers Raise Prices Following Trump Liberation Day Tariffs

Consumer goods companies and retailers are passing the costs of President Donald Trump's Liberation Day tariff policy directly to American shoppers through price hikes.

U.S. consumer goods companies and retailers are passing the costs of Donald Trump's Liberation Day tariff policy, announced on April 2, directly to American shoppers. Procter & Gamble has informed retailers such as Walmart that it will raise prices on approximately 25% of its U.S. product range, including staples like Tide and Bounty, with increases in the mid-single-digit range.

While luxury brands have absorbed the changes more easily, other firms face significant stock declines and squeezed margins. Companies tracked by Reuters estimate total losses between US$7.1 billion and $8.3 billion this year. Some firms initially stockpiled goods to delay price increases, but analysts expect the full inflationary impact to manifest by the fourth quarter as inventories deplete.

Reactions to the policy vary by sector. Swatch implemented price hikes of about five percent with minimal impact on sales. Conversely, the company Crunch reported that North American shoppers are hesitant to pay higher prices for its goods.
