Russia and North Korea Link Tumen River Bridge
Russia and North Korea held a ceremony to mark the linking of a new road bridge across the Tumen River to expand trade and military ties.
The Federal Government of Russia and the Government of North Korea held a ceremony on April 21, 2026, to mark the joining of the first road bridge connecting the two nations across the Tumen River. The 850-metre structure is scheduled for final completion on June 19 and is expected to open for traffic in the summer of 2026. According to the Russian Transport Ministry, the bridge will accommodate up to 300 vehicles and 2,850 people daily.
The project originated from a June 2024 summit between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un. Once operational, the bridge will connect to Russia's highway system and reduce the distance between Vladivostok and Rason to 320 kilometres. This infrastructure development is intended to expand trade, tourism, and humanitarian exchanges between North Korea and Russia's Far East.
The bridge coincides with deepening political and military cooperation under a 2024 comprehensive strategic partnership treaty, which includes a mutual defense provision. This relationship has already seen North Korea deploy troops to the Kursk region to support Russia's war against Ukraine. Recent high-level activity includes Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev meeting with Jo Yong Won and Health Minister Mikhail Murashko attending a hospital construction ceremony in Wonsan.
