Nigel Farage Faces Count Binface in Record Clacton By-Election

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is contesting a parliamentary by-election in Clacton on August 13, 2026, after resigning his seat in July. Farage triggered the vote to seek a fresh mandate and clear his name following a Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards investigation into undeclared financial gifts, including £5 million from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne and funds from George Cottrell. Farage has framed the contest as a battle of the people versus the establishment.

Major political parties, including Labour and the Conservatives, have boycotted the race, labeling it a political stunt. This has left Farage to face a record 34 candidates, the most in any UK parliamentary election. His most prominent opponent is Count Binface, a satirical persona created by comedian Jonathan Harvey. Binface, who campaigns wearing a dustbin on his head, has used the race to lampoon Farage's financial ties and propose absurd policies, such as nationalizing the singer Adele.

The election is expected to cost taxpayers approximately £250,000, leading to criticism that the move contradicts Farage's stance against government waste. Despite the controversy, local polling shows Farage leading with 73% of decided voters compared to 20% for Binface. If re-elected, Farage still faces the resumption of the financial inquiry in September, which could potentially lead to his suspension from Parliament.
