Trump Rejects Iranian Proposal for Strait of Hormuz Shipping Fees

President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to charge oil transporters insurance fees in the Strait of Hormuz amid warnings of heavy casualties in a potential war.

President Donald Trump rejected a proposal from Iran to implement an insurance and fee mechanism for commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Major General Mohsen Rezaei, a senior advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader, argued that oil transporters should pay for security and environmental protection to reduce risk and cover incident costs. Trump called the idea of shipping fees unacceptable, stating such a precedent would be a game changer for other global straits.

On Truth Social, Trump claimed Iran provided formal assurances that no tolls or insurance costs would be imposed, though he warned that negotiations would end immediately if this information proved false. This disagreement occurs as Rezaei questioned the sincerity of U.S. diplomatic efforts in Switzerland, alleging Washington is using talks to buy time for domestic issues.

Rezaei further warned that any military aggression from the U.S. or Israel would result in extensive human losses due to new Iranian military capabilities. He maintained that a sustainable deal requires the U.S. to remove sanctions, release frozen assets, and recognize Iran's peaceful nuclear activities and its role in managing the Strait of Hormuz.
