Christine Lagarde Warns Europe Must Not Miss AI Revolution
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warns that Europe must lead in artificial intelligence to avoid repeating past failures in the first digital revolution.
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned that Europe cannot afford to miss the artificial intelligence revolution, which she characterized as the second digital revolution. Speaking at a World Economic Forum event, Lagarde stated that Europe largely missed the first digital revolution, allowing the United States and China to capture the majority of commercial gains.
Lagarde identified market fragmentation within the euro zone as a primary barrier that prevents European firms from raising funds and scaling operations as effectively as their U.S. counterparts. She noted that the post-war growth model for Europe, which relied on expanding global trade, cheap energy, and U.S. security guarantees, is currently eroding.
Adding to these economic pressures, Lagarde highlighted that the return of Donald Trump to the White House has strained relations between the United States and Europe. She specifically cited the imposition of tariffs on European Union imports and the questioning of U.S. security commitments as factors contributing to the instability of the existing growth model.
