US Midterm Elections Face Delays and Logistical Hurdles

United States voters cast ballots in the 2026 midterms, with experts warning that close races and mail-in ballot processing may delay final results beyond election night.

Voters across the United States cast ballots on November 3 for all 435 House seats, 35 Senate seats, 39 governorships, and thousands of state legislative offices. Republicans are defending narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress during the final two years of Donald Trump's second term. Key battlegrounds include Ohio, Michigan, Maine, Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas, with voters focused on taxes, reproductive rights, and voting laws.

Election experts, including David Becker and Lawrence Norden, warn that control of the House and Senate may not be determined on election night. They attribute potential delays to the processing of mail-in ballots and the nature of close races. In California, mail ballots can be received up to a week after Election Day, while Pennsylvania and Wisconsin laws prohibit processing mail ballots until Tuesday morning. These factors often create a red mirage effect, where early in-person results favor Republicans before mail-in votes shift the lead to Democrats.

Logistical disruptions occurred throughout the day. Flooding in Florida forced the relocation of 18 polling places, and ballot scanner technical problems were reported in Westchester County, New York. In Florida, election supervisors in Seminole and Broward counties reported significant mail-in ballot delays and a lack of cooperation from postal officials. To ensure integrity, the United States Department of Justice deployed election monitors to all 50 states for the first time.
