Trump Administration Urges Europe to Release Diesel Stockpiles
The Trump administration is pressing European partners to release diesel stockpiles to lower record-high global prices and address fuel shortages.
The Trump administration is urging European partners to release significant diesel stockpiles to combat record-high global prices and fuel shortages. Robin Wright, representing the administration, stated that European countries maintain refined product stores well beyond the required 90-day minimum and argued that their reluctance to release these stocks is against global interests.
To facilitate this, Wright proposed a swap mechanism similar to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, where barrels are provided immediately in exchange for a larger amount next year, rather than through direct sales. While the G-7 previously committed to coordinated fuel release actions, the administration is currently working to ensure a clear flow of supply to stabilize the marketplace.
President Donald Trump has considered implementing an export ban on diesel to lower domestic prices but has decided against it. Administration officials noted that such a move could inadvertently increase gasoline prices due to refinery product mix and storage limitations.
