Donald Trump Claims US GDP Could Reach 20 Percent

President Donald Trump stated the US economy could achieve 20% GDP growth and urged the Federal Reserve to maintain the lowest interest rates in the world.

President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the United States economy could achieve GDP growth rates as high as 20%. Speaking during an Oval Office event focused on lowering prescription drug prices, Trump argued that such rapid growth should not lead the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates, asserting that "Success in growth does not cause inflation."

Trump advocated for the U.S. to maintain the lowest interest rates in the world, criticizing the current trend where positive economic data often prompts rate hikes due to inflation fears. He suggested the country could see GDP figures of "14, 15, 16 and 20."

Historical data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis indicates that annualized GDP growth of 20% or more has occurred only once since 1947, during the third quarter of 2020 following Covid-19 shutdowns. Current economic data shows a slower trend, with real GDP increasing at a 1.5% annualized rate in the second quarter of 2026. The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.5% to 3.75% in July, though some policymakers favor a hike in September to combat inflation.
