NSA Leadership Blocked Chinese Election Interference Reports From Trump

The White House Government Transparency Task Force released emails showing NSA leadership suppressed reports on Chinese election influence from reaching Donald Trump and Congress.

The White House Government Transparency Task Force released declassified emails on August 18, 2026, revealing that leadership at the National Security Agency blocked intelligence reports regarding Chinese influence in U.S. elections. The documents show that these reports were withheld from Donald Trump, Congress, and other intelligence leaders.

Internal communications from March 2020 indicate that analysts had proposed releasing the findings as early as 2018. However, George Barnes, the NSA deputy director from 2017 to 2023, blocked the release. Barnes reportedly feared that publishing the delayed information during a volatile political period would damage the agency's credibility and link the NSA to a perceived deep state involving the FBI, CIA, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

A senior White House official stated the documents demonstrate the politicization of intelligence gathering. The task force is continuing to investigate the suppression of evidence regarding foreign interference and election vulnerabilities that occurred between 2019 and 2022.
