Trump Conditions Federal Aid on Republican Midterm Victories

President Donald Trump suggested his administration will withhold federal aid and policy benefits from states that elect Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections.

President Donald Trump has linked the distribution of federal aid, veterans' compensation, and policy waivers to Republican victories in the upcoming midterm elections. During a series of rallies in Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Kansas, Trump stated that his administration would be less likely to provide benefits to states that elect Democrats.

In North Carolina, Trump conditioned the expedited settlement of Camp Lejeune water contamination claims and Hurricane Helene recovery funds on GOP wins. In Kansas, he tied the permanent authorization of year-round E15 ethanol sales to the reelection of Senator Roger Marshall. Trump further suggested he would ignore requests for state assistance from Democratic officials he dislikes, specifically naming Senator Jon Ossoff.

The White House defended the approach as a necessary strategy to maintain a Republican majority and deliver a commonsense agenda. Democratic candidates and advocates have condemned the remarks, characterizing them as an attempt to bribe voters and politicize essential, apolitical government services.
