Citigroup CEO Warns of AI-Driven Cyber Attack Risks

Citigroup Inc. CEO Jane Fraser warned at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York that companies are facing a "tsunami of patching" as they race to defend their perimeters against increasingly powerful AI models. Fraser noted that these models risk spurring cyber attacks and observed that the primary bottleneck for AI development has shifted from semiconductor chips to the energy required to power the systems.
The urgency follows the release of the Mythos model by Anthropic PBC. In response, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell convened Wall Street leaders to ensure their systems are prepared for the new technology.
Industry leaders expressed diverging views on the pace of development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slower pace of AI development and the use of third-party safety evaluators, a sentiment echoed by Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, who suggested the industry "take a deep breath, slow down." Conversely, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang rejected claims that AI technology poses an extinction risk to humanity.
