Trump Administration Farm Relief Offset by Iran War Costs

The Donald Trump administration's $12 billion agricultural relief package, announced in December 2025, has been largely offset by economic disruptions following the start of a war with Iran in February 2026. While the United States Department of Agriculture distributed approximately $9.6 billion to row-crop farmers, specialty growers continue to face delays in receiving aid.

Conflict in the Strait of Hormuz caused diesel fuel costs to spike by 46% and drove up fertilizer prices. These increases have left roughly 70% of American farmers unable to afford the fertilizer required for upcoming crops. To mitigate these costs, the United States Environmental Protection Agency waived summer restrictions on E15 biofuel.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins stated that the administration plans to use tariff revenue to reshore fertilizer production within the United States to reduce dependence on foreign markets.
