Opposition Accuses India of Martial Law Ahead of Impeachment
CPI(M) MP John Brittas accused the Indian government of implementing a martial law-like clampdown in New Delhi to suppress a symbolic public impeachment event.
Member of Parliament John Brittas accused the Indian central government of implementing a martial law-like clampdown in New Delhi to suppress massive public mobilization. Brittas claimed the government sealed borders and cancelled train services to prevent citizens from entering the city ahead of a symbolic public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar scheduled for October 30.
The opposition INDIA bloc organized the event at 10, Rajaji Marg as a prelude to a larger rally on November 1 at Ramlila Maidan. The protests center on concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The proceedings are set to be presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, with Mallikarjun Kharge moving the formal impeachment motion and Rahul Gandhi delivering the concluding address.
The Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the impeachment event as a political gimmick. In response, the ruling party launched a counter-campaign titled Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy. Union Minister Giriraj Singh characterized the opposition's actions as a mock drill intended to incite anarchy and provoke civil war.
