Malaysian Ringgit Gains Against Dollar Amid Fed Anticipation
The Malaysian ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Thursday and Friday as markets awaited economic signals from the Jackson Hole Symposium.
The Malaysian ringgit opened marginally higher against the US dollar on Thursday, trading at 4.0235/0305, and continued this upward trend on Friday, opening at 4.0255/4.0345. The local currency showed strength against a basket of major and regional currencies, including the Japanese yen, euro, Singapore dollar, and Thai baht, though it fell against the British pound on Friday.
Initial gains on Thursday were tempered by a rallying US Dollar Index, which reached approximately 99.165 points. This strength was driven by resilient US economic indicators from July, including increases in personal income, spending, and durable goods orders, alongside a 3.7 percent year-on-year rise in the personal consumption expenditures inflation rate.
By Friday, market participants adopted a cautious stance in anticipation of the annual Jackson Hole Symposium. Analysts from Bank Muamalat Malaysia indicated that the primary focus is now on United States Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh. Dr. Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid suggested that Warsh may adopt a hawkish tone regarding current economic and market conditions following recent consumer price index data.
