Japan Defence Minister Visits Australia for $10 Billion Frigate Deal

Shinjiro Koizumi, the Defence Minister of Japan, will visit Canberra on Tuesday to meet with Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles. The primary focus of the high-level engagement is the acquisition of three Mogami-class frigates by the Royal Australian Navy, a deal valued at $10 billion over ten years, alongside broader efforts to enhance security cooperation.

The visit occurs amid a diplomatic controversy involving Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Albanese faced criticism for his comments and hand gestures regarding a gift of melons presented to him by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. While the Australian opposition warned that the remarks could risk bilateral relations, the Government of Japan worked to prevent a formal diplomatic incident.

Japanese Ambassador Kazuhiro Suzuki stated that the two leaders maintain a personal trust relationship. A leaked diplomatic cable further revealed that Tokyo believed there was no "ill intention" in the actions of Albanese, and the Japanese government characterized the resulting media reporting as sensationalised.
