Donald Trump will announce a plan by Mesabi Metallics to construct a $15 billion steel mill in eastern Iowa. The project is expected to support over 1,700 jobs and aims to begin steelmaking by 2030. The facility will have an initial annual production capacity of 7.5 million tons, with the potential to expand to 10 million tons.
Mesabi Metallics, a subsidiary of the Indian conglomerate Essar Group, plans to transport iron ore from its recently opened mine in northern Minnesota via the Mississippi River to the Iowa site. The mill will utilize electric arc furnaces to process the ore alongside scrap steel.
The announcement comes as the Trump administration employs steel tariffs to bolster domestic production for national security. The move also occurs as Republicans face challenging midterm elections in states including Iowa.
