Mark Carney Campaigns in Alberta Ahead of Separation Referendum

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith urge Albertans to vote to remain in Canada during a referendum scheduled for Monday.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith campaigned together at an Alberta brewery to urge citizens to vote to remain in Canada during an upcoming referendum. The vote, scheduled for Monday, asks whether Alberta should stay in Canada or initiate a formal process toward a future binding vote on separation. While both Carney and Smith support a united Canada, they disagree on nine other ballot questions regarding immigration control and constitutional changes to reduce federal power in Ottawa; Carney urged voters to reject these proposals, a position Smith intends to challenge.

During a rally in Calgary attended by over 5,500 supporters, Carney argued that remaining in Canada would build a stronger future for the next generation, while separation would cause years of division and uncertainty. To maintain unity, Carney promised affordable housing, high-speed rail, and a new oil pipeline to the West Coast to establish Canada as an energy superpower. Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also campaigned in Calgary, describing separation as the easy way out.

Public sentiment appears divided on the necessity of the vote. An Abacus Data survey found 67 percent of Albertans want the government to focus on health care and affordability instead of the referendum. Additionally, a survey for the Alberta Federation of Labour indicated 56 percent of respondents believe the referendum should not have been held. Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour, stated the vote shows the Smith government is disconnected from the majority of Albertans.
