Trump Administration Sidelines 1,500 National Park Projects for D.C. Beautification
The Trump administration relegated 1,500 national park maintenance projects to low priority to fund Freedom 250 beautification efforts in Washington, D.C.
The Trump administration has relegated approximately 1,500 approved national park maintenance projects to a low priority list to redirect resources toward the Freedom 250 initiative. This initiative, which celebrates the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, prioritizes beautification projects in Washington, D.C., including a $16 million overhaul of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Officials have described the reflecting pool repairs as botched, citing algae and peeling sealant.
The sidelined projects, which span more than 200 sites including Yellowstone and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, are estimated to cost over $400 million. This shift occurs as the national park repair backlog exceeds $24 billion. The National Park Service has also seen its workforce reduced by at least 25%, with a decrease in contracting officers further hindering routine maintenance.
Critics argue that these aesthetic priorities siphon resources from critical infrastructure. Senator Angus King expressed opposition to the White House priority list being imposed on the maintenance pyramid, while other lawmakers criticized the administration for prioritizing aesthetics over necessary repairs.
