Emmanuel Macron Faces Civil Unrest and Calls for Resignation

President Emmanuel Macron struggles to contain widespread looting and violence across France while facing pressure from allies to resign before his term ends.

Widespread civil unrest has swept across France, resulting in torched buildings and looted shops, including in affluent districts of Paris. The violence has deepened a political crisis for Emmanuel Macron during his final six months in office, as strained public finances have limited his ability to offer concessions to defuse public anger.

In response to the turmoil, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu implemented local curfews. While Macron refused the resignation of his interior minister and ordered a review of police and intelligence failures, he declined to declare a state of emergency. Critics and former allies have condemned this approach, with former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe stating that the country needs to be commanded.

Adding to the domestic tension, Macron departed for a tour of Kuwait to secure fuel supplies, a move critics describe as evidence of his detachment from the crisis. Former ally Jean-Baptiste Moreau has urged the president to prepare for an early departure from office, suggesting that resigning is what he should do for the country.

The instability is widely seen as benefiting Marine Le Pen, the leader of the National Rally, who currently leads the polls for the 2027 presidency and has characterized the current administration as a crumbling power.
