Former Ukrainian Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi Claims Russia's Offensive Broken
Oleksandr Syrskyi claims Ukraine has stabilized the front line by inflicting massive Russian casualties and defended his dismissal following clashes over military procurement.
Former Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi stated in a BBC interview that Ukraine has stabilized the front line and broken the ability of Russia to advance. Syrskyi claimed Russian overall losses are six times higher than Ukraine's, and up to 11 times higher when counting only deaths. He noted that Russia seized only 61 square kilometres in the first half of 2026, attributing the stalemate to these casualty rates, technological advances, and strategic attacks on Russian weak points.
Syrskyi defended his military record against critics who labeled him "old school" and soldiers who alleged he ordered troops to hold positions until they were nearly surrounded. He also described the 2024 Kursk incursion as a necessity to disrupt Russian offensives.
Addressing his July 2026 dismissal by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Syrskyi revealed deep disagreements with former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. While protesters in Kyiv had demanded his removal, Syrskyi accused Fedorov of creating procurement imbalances by prioritizing drones over essential front-line equipment, which he claimed left the army with only half of its necessary drone supplies. Syrskyi was replaced as commander-in-chief by Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi.
