India Projected to Exceed 800 Billion Rupee Asset Target
The Government of India is expected to surpass its annual disinvestment and asset-monetization target of 800 billion rupees for the first time since 2019.
The Government of India is projected to exceed its annual disinvestment and asset-monetization target of 800 billion rupees, or approximately 8.4 billion dollars, for the first time since the 2018-19 fiscal year. This fiscal progress is driven largely by the pending privatization of IDBI Bank, alongside stronger tax collections and a sharp decline in fertilizer subsidy costs.
Urea prices have dropped 60% from their April peak, allowing the government to reduce its projected subsidy bill from 3 trillion rupees to roughly 2.3 trillion rupees. This recovery follows a period of instability in April, when fuel excise duty cuts cost the state 1.23 trillion rupees. During that period, officials feared the deficit could widen to 4.8% of GDP due to global shocks and conflict in Iran.
To further support national supplies, Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to increase fertilizer shipments to India. The Ministry of Finance continues to oversee the asset-sale targets as part of a broader effort to maintain fiscal discipline.
