Jamie Raskin Probes Alleged Manipulation of University Antisemitism Investigations

Representative Jamie Raskin is investigating claims that the Trump administration manipulated antisemitism probes to strong-arm Ivy League universities into multimillion-dollar settlements.

Representative Jamie Raskin, ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, has launched an investigation into allegations that the Trump administration manipulated federal probes into antisemitism at American universities. The inquiry follows a whistleblower complaint from Haley Van Erem, a former Justice Department attorney, who claims the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism used predetermined outcomes and procedural irregularities to pressure institutions into costly settlements and funding freezes.

Van Erem alleges that political appointees overrode career investigators and targeted Muslim professors and Middle East studies faculty. She specifically claims that Brown University was pressured into a $50 million settlement and Columbia University paid $200 million despite a lack of evidence for Title VI violations. The complaint further asserts that officials discussed funding freezes for Harvard University before investigations were complete and that some probes were based on a single New York Post article.

The United States Department of Justice has denied the allegations, stating that Van Erem did not work on the university investigations and defending the integrity of the probes. Meanwhile, the judiciary has pushed back against the administration's actions; a federal judge recently dismissed a lawsuit against Harvard University and ordered the government to reverse $2.6 billion in funding cuts to the institution, describing the efforts as an ideologically motivated assault.
